Morley v South Perth

After the heartbreak of falling short to Wanneroo the season before, we entered 2009/10 determined and ready to write a different ending. The 90's and 2000's saw a successful Morley Club continually fall short at the final hurdle after the 90/91 triumph, what followed became one of the most complete and memorable seasons in club history.

A huge boost came in the off-season with the signing of Mitch Graham, whose presence added leadership and balance across the lineup. But the excitement didn’t stop there.

Under the League’s import rules, Morley secured an incredible package deal of four American players, Jeff Sonnenberg, John McLeod, Zack McMillan, and Kevin Zerbo. They arrived just in time for the AFL Grand Final celebrations at the club, fitted in straight away, and it was clear from day one that we had a great bunch of guys joining the nest. They lifted the club on and off the field, rotating between State League and AAA and bringing professionalism, energy, and depth to both squads.

A timely return from Chris House from professional baseball boosted the lineup at exactly the right time.

Finals Series: Big Players, Big Moments

Game 1: Morley 3 – South Perth 1

Brendan Sing and Jake White combined to deliver the perfect opening performance on the mound, setting Morley on the right path.

Game 2: Morley 4 – South Perth 2

Import pitcher Jeff Sonnenberg produced one of the greatest playoff pitching efforts in club history (Ken McGee aside) throwing 10 innings to secure the win.

And who can forget the came the game-defining moment:

With the bases loaded and the game in the balance, David Hannah delivered the go-ahead hit off future MLB pitcher Warwick Saupold, igniting the Eagles’ dugout and shifting the finale in Morley’s favour. Mitch Graham to made the final out and secured the Premiership win

Adam Holt starred all grand final series to win the Max Lenegan for Finals MVP.

State League, Reserves and Women’s all won premierships in the same season, and it didn’t stop there, our Masters side also claimed the title, completing a rare quadruple-premiership year for the Eagles.
